IPBES « Transformative change » assessment

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body established to strengthen the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. It was established in Panama on 21 April 2012 by 94 governments. Its secretariat is based in Bonn, Germany, and it now has 149 member states.

In 2019, IPBES adopted a global assessment on biodiversity and ecosystem services that identifies the need for transformative change in our societies to live in harmony with nature. IPBES member states subsequently voted to launch an IPBES assessment on transformative change. The adoption of this assessment was adopted during the 11th IPBES plenary in December 2024. The University of Montpellier had been selected to host the Technical Support Unit (TSU) responsible for supporting the project management for the IPBES Secretariat.
